Holi, preceded by the harvest season, gives farmers and their families reason for merriment. Fresh grain is offered to Agni when the Holika bonfire is lit. Roasted grains are distributed as yajna-shesh or prasad. The predominantly social festival assumes an agrarian touch. Holi is a festival that welcomes the spring; it celebrates the life and energy of the new season. The weather is balmy and there its fragrance all around. The vibrant festival adds color to life.
The festival of colors is a time of literary and theatrical activity. Poems of Surdas recount Holi in Braj Bhumi of Krishna. Another legend talks of Prahlad, child devotee of Vishnu, being chastised by his father, Hiranyakashyapu, a non-believer. Holi provides an opportunity for celebration, with no discrimination. The elite and the commoner are encouraged to embrace each other after sprinkling colors on one another. In the sprinkling of colors, there is a free flow of fun and frolic, mirth and merriment.
Although social barriers exist, they are disregarded during Holi. One covers one’s excesses by offering an excuse in a sentence saying, “Bura na mano, Holi hai” — Please don’t be offended, it is Holi. There is no gender bias either.
